Overview
Students will submit four questions about the readings to TurnItIn.
In eCampus you can go to “Course Tools” from the lower-left menu in the course page and
select “TurnItIn Assignments” and from there find the assignment you will be grading.
If needed, you can provide feedback in the TurnItIn interface which the students can then see once you’ve assigned a grade.
NOTE: As of Fall 2018, we’re moving towards having PLRQ quizzes instead. These are 10 questions randomly selected from a pool
(of previous years’ submissions, for example) where the students must decide the quality of each question.
We assign partial credit (50% right now) for answers adjacent to the correct choices, possibly excepting ones where
the question should be judged ‘not acceptable’, since we want to make sure the students are actually reading the book.
Grading
The rules for PLRQs (that the students see) are here.
Most important when grading PLRQs are these considerations:
- Is it obvious that the person read?
- Is the question relevant to the reading?
- Is it clear and well-phrased?
- Does it reflect critical thinking?
- Is the question relevant to the science of the reading?
So for each question that students submitted, you need to check all these 5 considerations above and give them a score out of 20 (They are supposed to submit 4 questions so it adds up to 20 points, with each of the above bullets as one point).
Once you get the hang of it, these can be done rather by eyeballing.
If the questions are generally satisfactory (the score is 17 or more based on the rubrics), you can give them full credit in turnitin (which is 10 because you need to scale the score to 10 and then enter it into turnitin).
Because of the large number of the students in the class, you don’t need to give feedback for those who pass. But you need to give feedback to the students who fail.
If they were submitted late or suggest the student is not really engaging with the reading, then points will come off. Note that you cannot enter numbers with decimal places in turnitin so we just round them up.
As described in the linked document, grades will be assigned like this:
- Acceptable questions: 10/10
- Late acceptable questions: 8/10
- Revised acceptable questions: 8/10
- Failing questions: 5/10
Note that Unit 1 is exception. Students should revise their submission until they get all questions completely right based on the rubrics(20/20).
NOTE FOR REVISIONS (especially for unit 1): eCampus currently has TurnItIn assignments set up for the original PLRQs and one revision for each unit.
If students need more revisions, we allow them to just e-mail us the updated questions and then we’ll update their scores in the revision assignment (make a note about the updated questions in the feedback as well, for record-keeping).
