TurnItIn is used to check for plagiarism, but we can also leave comments on submissions there (for PLRQs and paper drafts).
In eCampus, on the class page, there will be a “Turnitin Assignments” link under “Course Tools”. Selecting an assignment from there will show all the students in the class, whether they have submitted for this assignment or not. Note that you can sort the list using the headings at the top (e.g. sort by date to see who submitted late or sort by similarity score to check for potential plagiarizers). Note also the tabs at the top, including the “Edit Assignment” tab, which is where due dates and other asignment details are set.
-Click on the pencil icon in the “Grade” column to bring up a student’s submission. In the window that pops up, (the “TurnItIn feedback studio”) you can input the grade at the top, click or highlight text on the paper to leave localized comments, or leave general comments by clicking on the blue icon on the right that looks like a pencil on a tablet.
-The red items below the blue comment tools are various filters for checking for plagiarism. Click on the box with the total similarity score to see a breakdown of the categories of potentially-plagiarized sources; click the little arrow next to a category to see it broken down into individual papers, which you could then compare side-by-side to the paper you’re grading.
-The grey boxes below the plagiarism tools are for downloading the paper and seeing details about its submission. (These details could be useful for plagiarism cases; if you can pull up a potentially plagiarized paper, you can check its details here to see if it’s just another draft submitted by the same person earlier. If it is, you can choose to ignore it.)
Note that you can also turn off high-def or switch to “TurnItIn Classic” if the newer “Feedback Studio” window gets buggy. If this causes you to ‘log out’ of TurnItIn, you may have to clear your browser caches to get back to the Feedback Studio.
NOTE: STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SEE THE COMMENTS YOU LEAVE UNTIL THE “POST DATE” OF THE ASSIGNMENT HAS PASSED. Set this in “Edit Assignment” along with the start date and end date.
Note also the “Response” column on the assignment inbox page. When this shows a silhouette with a checkmark in it, it means the student has viewed the document with the grade and comments you left.
If any papers have suspicious similarity scores, you can resubmit the paper to see if/how the score fluctuates. First, select the checkbox by the relevant submission and ‘download’ it from the top of the page. Once you have a copy, delete the original (at the top of the page, again–near the download button). Then hit ‘submit’ at the top and you’ll go to a page where you can choose the student for whom you are (re)submitting a document. Select the file you downloaded earlier, verify that the preview you are shown is the correct document, and confirm the submission.
