Information for Prospective Faculty

The following information/questions are intended for those interested in faculty positions at Texas A&M University. These are questions we ask in the first round of interviews for people we are considering for faculty jobs. We recommend you include information relevant to these questions in your application material (wherever applicable to the position of which you are applying to).

  • What interests you about the faculty position specifically at Texas A&M? What collaborations do you envision forming with the existing PIs at Texas A&M?
  • Were you able to create person-to-person collaborations beyond your advisors or your own institution during your postdoc tenure? If so, who of them are you planning to work with in the future?
  • In what direction do you envision your research program is heading in the next 2-5 years?
    • Follow-up 1: What resources (startup) do you need from the department in terms of personnel, lab, instrumentation and/or computing equipment to succeed as an assistant professor?
    • Follow-up 2: Can you give us an example of an external funding proposal you would submit in your first year – topic, agency, resources you will ask etc.
  • There are many skills needed in doing HEP-EX; designing and building hardware, developing electronics for signal processing, DAQ and computing, physics analysis and Monte Carlo simulation, social skills and leadership. Where among these areas have you built a solid foundation and where do you see your own center of gravity in these areas (or combinations of these areas) as you develop leadership in a major HEP experiment?
  • Tell us some examples of your own experiences mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
    • Follow-up 1: Can you give us an example project that you feel comfortable giving to a beginning graduate student?
    • Follow-up 2: Can you also give a specific course (or courses) that you would like to teach?
  • What do you consider to be your single most significant scientific accomplishment ?
  • Do you have any questions for the committee? (Reserve a possibility to answer questions later/offline).
